In HCM City, only 140,000 university entrance exam applications were submitted, 10,000 less than 2009. In Dong Thap province, students sent in 24,044 applications, 3700 less than last year.

In Hanoi, the Hanoi Education and Training Department has received 159,660 applications for university exams, a decrease of 33,516 applications, or down 17.2 percent from 2009.

Ta Song Ha, Deputy Head of the Professional Training Division under the Hanoi Education and Training Department speculated that the number of 12th grade students in 2010 is lower than in 2009, plus enrollment fees are higher, so students must carefully consider their applications.

Fewer applicants for top universities

Head of the Training Division at Can Tho University, Nguyen Vinh An, revealed that, on May 4, he has received the statistics on registered examinees in the Mekong Delta.

“The number of applications for taking entrance exams to Can Tho University has decreased by 9000 applications from last year. The university is still awaiting reports from other education and training departments to have an exact figure. However, the final figure will not change much, because most examinees come from the Mekong Delta,” An explained.

In 2009, Can Tho University received 66,000 applications.

HCM City Economics University received reports that calculate a decrease in registered examinees of 10-30 percent compared to 2009. They estimate that the total number of uni exam applications will be 30,000, a decrease of 5000 applications from last year.

Nguyen Anh Son, Director of the Enrollment Centre of HCM City Industry University, still does not have exact figures, but preliminary statistics show a sharp fall in the number of examinees.

Meanwhile, Nguyen Thi Hong Vinh, Deputy Head of Dong Thap University, forecasts decreases of 30-40 percent in registered examinees.

A growing trend for students nowadays is to study at universities near their homes. Take for example Khanh Hoa province.  Nha Trang University received 7500 applications from provincial residents out of 28,200 total applications. Nha Trang Pedagogical Junior College has received 2500 applications, while Khanh Hoa Medical Junior College has 1900 applications. Few have applied for exams outside the province.

Similarly, most Dong Thap students have chosen to study at schools in the province or in the Mekong Delta region. Dong Thap University is the top choice, receiving 6754 area applicants out of 24,044 total applications.

In Dong Nai province, Lac Hong University is the favourite, while in Quang Nam province, 1/3 of students in the province will take exams at Da Nang University.
