April 30 holds a special place in all Vietnamese people’s hearts as it marks the liberation of Southern Vietnam and the unification of the country. This occasion creates a pride atmosphere and reminds people of the glorious history of the nation.

On this day, the streets are covered with bright red and yellow colours as people hoist flags across the country to celebrate this holiday while songs about history remind people of the past victory.

Let’s take a trip back to 1975 to understand more about this event. Following the success of the Tay Nguyen and Hue - Da Nang campaigns, the Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam decided to launch the Ho Chi Minh campaign to liberate Sai Gon - Gia Dinh in Southern Vietnam. Before heading to Sai Gon, the national army attacked Xuan Loc and Phan Rang, which were the most important defensive lines protecting Saigon from the east.

On April 26, the Vietnamese soldiers took the offensive and approached the centre of Saigon. At 10:45 AM on April 30, tanks and infantry entered the Independence Palace, arrested the cabinets of Saigon. The president of Southern Vietnam, Duong Van Minh surrendered unconditionally. Same day at 11:30 AM, the national flag was hoisted on top of the Independence Place, signifying a victory campaign.

April 30 is a memorable day as it marked the end of the American war and 30 years of fighting for independence. This day is also the milestone of independence, unity, and liberation of Vietnam. The historical photos below will bring you back to the cheerful atmosphere of the year 1975.
