Vietnamese Reunification Day is one of the most important public holidays in Viet Nam. On this day, people across the country come together to celebrate the victory that ended the war and brought the nation back together.

When is Reunification Day?

Vietnamese Reunification Day, also known as Victory Day, is on April 30 every year. This day symbolises national unity, resilience, and the sacrifices of the Vietnamese people during one of the most difficult periods in their history.

It is a public holiday, so schools, offices, and businesses are closed. If April 30 is on a weekend, the holiday is moved to the next weekday.

The history and meaning of Reunification Day

In late 1974 and early 1975, the Vietnamese army won important battles in Tây Nguyên and Huế–Đà Nẵng. These victories weakened the Southern army and helped prepare for the final attack. Soon after, the Vietnamese leaders started the Ho Chi Minh Campaign to completely free the South.

Before reaching Saigon, the army fought hard in Xuân Lộc and Phan Rang. Winning these battles opened the way to the Southern capital. On April 26, 1975, the final battle began.

Just a few days later, on the morning of April 30, 1975, Vietnamese tanks entered the Independence Palace at 10:45 AM. Not long after, the president of South Viet Nam, Dương Văn Minh, announced an unconditional surrender. By 11:30 AM, the national flag of Vietnam was flying over the palace, marking the success of the campaign and the end of the war.

This moment was not only the end of a long and painful conflict, but also the beginning of a new chapter in Vietnam’s history. The country was finally reunified, both politically and geographically. The war had lasted for 30 years, and now peace and unity had returned to the nation.

Reunification Day, held every year on April 30, is one of the most meaningful national holidays in Viet Nam. It reminds people of the sacrifices made for independence and the strength of unity.

The victory also sent a powerful message to the world: even a small country, when united and determined, can overcome great challenges. This inspired many other nations that were also fighting for freedom and independence.

How do the Vietnamese celebrate Reunification Day?

People across Viet Nam celebrate this day with pride and joy. Here’s how they celebrate:

  • Raise the national flag at homes  and public places
  • Sing patriotic songs to remember the soldiers and the victory
  • Decorate streets with red flags and banners
  • Watch fireworks in big cities like Ho Chi Minh City and Ha Noi

Especially, Ho Chi Minh City and Ha Noi often come alive with patriotic pride, showcasing the nation’s rich cultural heritage and unity.
