Vo Thi Minh looked at the notice board at the Children’s House in the afternoon of May 27 for a long while, but she still could not decide which classes her children should attend. The Children’s House opens many courses for children in summer, including music, singing, dance, martial arts, painting and swimming classes.

Every class lasts only an hour, so she wanted her children to attend two classes on the same day, so she can drop off and pick up her kids more conveniently.

It would be very costly to attend many classes at the same time. Minh estimated that she would have to pay 480,000-800,000 dong for her two children to attend classes here for two months.

Nguyen Thi Lieu, who was also at the Go Vap Children’s House, commented that she is looking for outdoor activities for her son, but she has not found any. Meanwhile, the Children’s House does not offer anything new, just writing practice, painting and martial arts classes, which her son took last year.

Every summer, these sites across 24 districts in HCM City receive hundreds of thousands of children. Some classes will open in just a few more days, but they already refuse more enrollees since the classes are already full.

Spending summer holidays with… grandparents

The mother of a boy named Hai Dong wrote on her blog that she does not know where to send him so that he can enjoy the summer. She does not want to leave Dong alone at home, because she worries that Dong might do something foolish. She could send Dong to his grandparents living in the countryside, but they are both too old and weak to look after Dong

Ly Cong Chanh in HCM City remarked that he feels lucky because he can send his two sons to Tien Giang with his grandparents.

“It is not too far from the city, and the children can play outdoors and enjoy the fresh air. I don’t have to spend much money to provide them an entertaining summer,” he boasted.

Sending children to the countryside has proven to be the best solution for young families. However, not many parents are as lucky as Chanh.

The working holiday

All parents want to give their kids an entertaining summer holiday, but in many cases, the holiday turns out to be a third semester.

Khanh Lam explained that her daughter has finished nursery school this year, but she must bring her to the school again this summer, because there is nowhere to go. “There are very few entertainment places in Hanoi,” she complained.

Nguyen Van Hung in HCM City also must send his son to classes again because he cannot find any suitable place for him. As such, instead of relaxing and enjoying the holiday, many students are going to school again.
